ESI

Acronym for Epidural Steroid Injection Acronym for Emergency Severity Index , a triage tool used in emergency departments. 5 usually denotes the lowest acuity (least sick) while level 1 is most sick patients.

EPAP

Acronym for Enspiratory Positive Airway Pressure , usually part of BiPAP

Extremis

  Extremely sick or near death. “We found the patient in extremis and he was subsequently intubated and covered with broad spectrum antibiotics. He made a full recovery after a 6 month ICU stay.”  

Excoriation

an erosion (depression in skin thinner than the epidermis, thus superficial) caused by scratching

Eschar

Brown flaking over a lesion that contains dead necrotic tissue. Separate from Scab which is composed of dried blood or fluids

Erosion

a depression in the skin that is not thicker than the epidermis, thus is quite superficial

Erythemetous

Red in Color (adj). “The skin lesion is erythemetous.”

ESR

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. a laboratory value used to determine the amount of inflammation in the body. Usually referred to as ESR. “The ESR is elevated and thus the patient may have a rheumatological disorder causing her hand pain.”
